Leadership Built for the Long Term

How Experience, Governance, and Stewardship Shape Avangard Investments
Disciplined investing begins with disciplined governance. While systematic investment processes guide portfolio decisions, they are most effective when supported by experienced leadership, independent oversight, and a culture of accountability.
Successful investment management extends well beyond identifying investment opportunities. It requires an organisation built to last, on transparent decision making, clearly defined responsibilities, operational resilience, and a commitment to acting in the best interests of investors. These principles help organisations respond thoughtfully to evolving market conditions, regulatory developments, and industry expectations.
This philosophy has shaped Avangard since its inception. Governance is not viewed as a standalone corporate function but as an integral part of responsible investment management and the stewardship of investor capital.
Building the Foundation
Every investment firm reflects the vision and experience of the people who establish it.
Avangard was founded by Chief Executive Officer Alfred "Alf" Eggo and Chief Operating Officer Jules Aknin. Alfred brings more than three decades of research into machine learning and quantitative modelling applied to financial markets. Jules brings a decade of experience building and operating businesses across multiple industries. His background is in execution: building operational infrastructure, managing client relationships, and growing businesses from the ground up. He brings that same commercial discipline to Avangard, leading operations, investor relations, and business development.
Neither founder came from a traditional fund management background. Avangard began with a friendship. Alfred and Jules met in 2017, and over years of early morning conversations, Alfred shared his research and his conviction that markets could be understood differently. Jules saw the commercial opportunity and the operational challenge of building something from it. In 2021, they decided to do exactly that, and started working on Avangard.
The firm was built on a simple belief: that systematic, technology-driven investing required a different kind of thinking, one less constrained by convention and more focused on what the data actually shows.
Alfred Eggo's research into machine learning and quantitative investment models predates the widespread commercial adoption of artificial intelligence across many industries. Over more than three decades, he has dedicated his career to exploring how advanced analytics, behavioural data, and evolving technologies can be applied to mineral exploration and financial markets in a practical and disciplined way. This long standing research ultimately led to the development of A.L.F.R.E.D. (Adaptive Learning For Ranking Equities and Derivatives), the proprietary investment system that underpins Avangard's systematic investment process. Rather than being developed in response to recent advances in artificial intelligence, A.L.F.R.E.D. represents the culmination of 24 years of continuous research, refinement, and practical application within investment management.
Complementing this technical expertise, Jules Aknin has played a central role in transforming that investment capability into a structured investment management business. With more than a decade of leadership experience spanning financial oversight, strategic planning, investor relations, business development, and operational management, he has led the development of the firm's operational infrastructure, governance framework, compliance processes, and investor engagement strategy. His focus has been on ensuring that the organisation is supported by the systems, governance, and operational discipline required for sustainable growth.
Together, the founders have built an organisation where systematic investing is supported not only by proprietary technology, but also by sound governance, operational accountability, and thoughtful leadership. Their complementary expertise reflects a shared belief that successful investment management requires more than innovative research. It also depends on the right partnership,an efficient team, combining disciplined execution, strong organisational foundations, the right technology and responsible stewardship of investor capital.
Governance That Supports Investors
Leadership provides direction. Governance provides the structure needed to succeed.
For investors, effective governance is about more than investment decisions. It is about confidence that the entire business is being run properly.
That means documented investment processes, clearly defined responsibilities, financial controls, regulatory compliance, and transparent reporting. It means a management team that acts in the interests of investors across every part of the business, not just when it comes to portfolio construction.
Investors who allocate to a fund are not just backing a strategy. They are backing a business. At Avangard, we take that seriously. Equal emphasis is placed on succession planning, business continuity, and governance practices that support sustainable growth as the organisation continues to evolve.
Independent Perspective, Broader Insight
Independent oversight is an important element of responsible investment management.
Complementing the executive leadership team is an independent Advisory Board comprising experienced professionals whose careers span institutional investment, capital markets, risk management, wealth management, investor relations, and financial services leadership.
The Board provides strategic guidance across investment policy, portfolio construction, governance, regulatory compliance, operational best practice, distribution strategy, and broader industry developments. While it does not participate in the day to day management of the business, its independent perspective contributes to informed strategic decision making and strengthens the firm's governance practices.
Collectively, the Advisory Board contributes well over a century of experience across Australia's financial services industry and international capital markets. This breadth of expertise enables Avangard to consider opportunities and challenges through multiple professional perspectives while remaining responsive to an evolving regulatory and investment landscape.
Governance in Practice
Governance is most meaningful when it is demonstrated through consistent actions rather than documented policies alone.
Transparency and accountability are embedded throughout the investment process. Research is documented, investment methodologies are clearly defined, and decisions follow structured, repeatable processes supported by quantitative analysis. This approach promotes consistency while allowing ongoing refinement as markets, technologies, and regulatory expectations continue to evolve.
These principles extend beyond investment management into the broader organisation, shaping operational discipline, regulatory compliance, and communication with investors. Together, they reinforce a culture of responsibility that supports both organisational resilience and long term stewardship.
The Principles That Guide Governance
The governance philosophy is built around several interconnected principles that support both investment management and organisational leadership.
Experienced Leadership - Executive leadership combines expertise across quantitative research, artificial intelligence, investment management, business operations, strategic planning, and investor relations. This complementary experience provides balanced leadership across both investment and organisational priorities.
Independent Oversight - An independent Advisory Board contributes objective guidance across governance, investment policy, regulatory developments, operational best practice, and industry trends. These external perspectives strengthen decision making while reinforcing accountability.
Structured Decision Making - Investment decisions are supported by documented research, systematic methodologies, and clearly defined governance processes that promote consistency, transparency, and accountability throughout the organisation.
Responsible Stewardship - The governance philosophy reflects a commitment to transparency, continuous improvement, and the responsible management of investor capital. Every aspect of the organisation is designed to support sustainable growth while maintaining the trust placed in it by investors.
Stewardship Beyond Investment Performance
Investment strategies, technologies, and regulatory expectations will continue to evolve. The principles that underpin responsible investment management remain constant.
Experienced leadership, independent oversight, and sound governance provide the environment in which Avangard's systematic investment philosophy can be implemented consistently and responsibly. Together, these elements support an organisation committed not only to investment excellence, but also to accountability, resilience, and the careful stewardship of investor capital for generations of investors to come.
